I’ve been stupidly busy of late, but I figured I would take a few moments to pass along this humorous picture which happened across my email inbox. I like to call it the “evolution of gay marriage views” – Enjoy!

CNN Taken to Task Over Its NON-Critical Thinking on the Boston Bombing
Posted by mattusmaximus on April 19, 2013
As I mentioned in my last post regarding this past Monday’s Boston Marathon bombing, there has been a huge amount of rumor, misinformation, and innuendo floating all over the place, and we should do what we can to combat it.
Of course, one would hope that our media outlets, such as “The Most Trusted Name in News” CNN, would take such a task to heart, making certain to get their facts straight before they report the news. But, sadly, in the era of the 24-hour “news” cycle, it appears that getting it right takes a back seat to getting it first.
I can think of no other way to illustrate this point more clearly than to reference The Daily Show’s incredible smackdown of just how badly CNN botched some major news regarding the bombing:
Yup, that’s CNN… the most busted name in news.

So Much for The End of the World, Mayan Style!
Posted by mattusmaximus on December 22, 2012
Well, it seems that yet another end-of-the-world prophecy has bitten the dust. Dec. 21st, 2012 – dreaded day of ”the end” as supposedly fortold by the Mayan Calendar - has come and gone just like every other doomsday. Beyond citing the obvious fact that we’re still here, I cannot help but poke fun by passing along this humorous photo of arch-skeptic James Randi while he was in Cozumel, Mexico just last week

EVP Patrol Squad: When Parody is Indistinguishable from Woo
Posted by mattusmaximus on November 3, 2012
I just ran across this parody of the “History” Channel by some folks calling themselves the EVP Patrol Squad. They are spoofing the various pseudoscientific “experts” that are regularly paraded out on that channel in favor of various ancient alien, paranormal, and ghostly claims. The funny thing is that if you actually watch some of the stuff on the History Channel, it is so goofy that it almost seems that this is straight from one of their shows – so this is good evidence of Poe’s Law. Enjoy!
I don’t know about you all, but I don’t think that I’ll ever be able to look a sporks the same again. The horror… THE HORROR!!!

Fun with Pareidolia: Mr. Bill in my Soup!
Posted by mattusmaximus on September 28, 2012
I’ve been meaning to post this for awhile, but I keep forgetting to do so. During my summer vacation to the Adirondacks in New York, my wife and I took a break from hiking to get some dinner. As we were getting ready to chow down, lo and behold, I observed the following “miraculous” appearance in my wife’s soup!…
Laugh if you will, unbeliever, but you should tremble in awe at the miraculous appearance of…
… Mr. Bill! Ohhhh Noooooo!!!
Of course it isn’t Mr. Bill in my soup, folks. It’s just another classic case of pareidolia, the same phenomenon by which people think they see dogs or cars in the clouds, the so-called Face on Mars, the Virgin Mary on a piece of toast, or visions of Jesus in a window. Essentially, our brains work as pattern-recognition machines, and one of the most familiar patterns which we are evolutionarily programmed to recognize is other human faces. So we tend to see human (or human-like) faces in bits of random data even when there really is no face there to begin with!
I really like how skeptical magicians Penn & Teller put it during their Bullshit! episode on supposed “miracles”, so I’ll let them have the last word

Convergence 2012 Day 1: “Final CONvergence: Doomsday Scenarios” Panel
Posted by mattusmaximus on July 6, 2012
The first day of Convergence 2012 involved the usual… checking into the hotel, getting registered for the Con, and so on. But for me it also included a very fun, late-night panel about various doomsday scenarios, including killer asteroids, massive solar flares, outbreaks of deadly infectious disease (think the Black Plague), the potential failure of the Internet, release of so-called “grey goo” nanites, nuclear war, and everyone’s favorite – zombies!
While it was a serious discussion, there was also much humor involved (I will never forget Jason Thibeault’s quip: “I tried to start a nuclear war, until I took an arrow to the knee”
), and the audience Q&A was very lively. If you’d like to listen to the panel discussion, just click the link below to hear my recording:
Final CONvergence Doomsday Scenarios – Convergence 2012
The zombies are right outside the door. Which geeks do you keep close and which to you push into the parking lot as bait. Surviving apocalyptic scenaries convention style! Panelists: Jason Thibeault, Adam Whitlatch, Robert Smith?, Matt Lowry, PZ Myers

“Teach Alternate Views” Humor from Non Sequitur
Posted by mattusmaximus on June 19, 2012
In some of my recent blog posts, I wondered about the utility of calling the bluff of creationists and going with their argument of “teaching all views” regarding evolution, creationism, etc. If a picture is worth a thousand words, this June 18th cartoon from Non Sequitur just nails it

Stephen Colbert PWNs Don McLeroy, Creationist Crank from Texas
Posted by mattusmaximus on April 26, 2012
If you know who Don McLeroy is (and if you don’t, read up on him here), then you know he is quite notorious for being reality-challenged. In what I can only describe as a stroke of comedic genius, Stephen Colbert interviews McLeroy on the Colbert Report. Enjoy
